Act of Life in Florida...AGAIN

Celebrate with us! A recent trip to Florida marked the third time we have taken our training there in two years!

God is opening doors and fostering relationships with many people in the Sunshine State.

October 7-9 I went to speak at the "Sound the Call" Conference for the Florida Baptist Children's Homes. The conference, with the theme of "For His Glory", was held at the lovely Lake Yale Conference Center in Leesburg. The plenary and breakout sessions provided training, worship and encouragement for the more than 230 pregnancy center staff and volunteers in attendance from across the state. What an honor to join people like Pastor Andy Merritt, Sol Pitchon, Mary Lou Hendry and others who have been serving pregnancy centers for decades.

One of our goals is to return to Florida with our full day training in 2011. Several pregnancy centers and adoption agencies are working together to host a joint event. Please pray for this effort as plans move forward. If you would like to know more about how you can help us reach this goal please contact our office at 713.991.LIFE (5433).

Upon our return, we trained an additional 11 pregnancy counselors for the Pregnancy Assistance Center North (PACN) in The Woodlands, Texas, on Friday October 15. We thoroughly enjoy interacting with these ministries as they provide essential education and assistance to people experiencing unplanned pregnancies. PACN is a prime example of ministry excellence, and we are grateful to have a wonderful working relationship with them.

It is exciting to see the Lord expand our territory and continue to offer opportunity to educate, encourage and equip people with tools to present adoption in the counseling room. You are helping us make an impact! Thank you for your support.

Talking with CareNet NW Houston

Wow! Last night I had a great time with an incredibly interactive group of men and women from a pregnancy resource center in NW Houston. We explored adoption for 2 hours and tackled some of the basics of how to present adoption as a parenting choice to people experiencing unplanned pregnancies.

The training was hosted by CareNet NW in their brand new facility off Wunderlich Drive in NW Houston. A special thanks goes to Nanette George who organized the event as well as to Jan Hester who is serving as Act of Life's Interim Executive Director (both pictured above). It was a lively event that not only provided great fellowship but resulted in more counselors becoming educated and equipped to share the good news of adoption.

Last night was slightly different than some of the events I speak at. I had the great pleasure of having my daughter attend with me. She was a terrific help to Jan and me as she handed out resources and even took the photo in this blog. We are training the next generation of volunteers already! Don't count out kids just because they are young. They have a contribution to make in ministry.

In fact, just having her in attendance last night served as a living reminder of how adoption affects generations! Were it not for the life-giving choice of adoption that made my life possible my daughter would not be alive. What a thought!

The next time you are privileged to walk alongside someone through the adoption process or even just follow at a distance remember this: the women and men who courageously choose adoption for their children are heroes. They are people who establish strong families that provide opportunity to allow their children to become all God intended for them to be. They also lay the foundation for future generations who will follow.

What a legacy adoption provides!

Lord, bless birth mothers and birth fathers who are considering adoption for their children. Lead them into truth and strengthen them in their quest to discover your will for their lives and the lives of their pre-born children. May they choose life!
Bless also, the adoptive parents who are charged with rearing children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Equip them to raise the next generation who will be living examples demonstrating that choosing life always yields blessings. In Your name we pray, Amen.

From a Teen Birthmother

"Adoption?! I could never give my baby away!"

"I can't choose adoption because I'll never see my baby again."

These are two common statements pregnancy counselors sometimes hear from their clients when they present adoption as a parenting choice. They are only two examples and reasons why we established Act of Life and our educational programs. Rather than provide commentary on these statements from our perspective, we think it better for you to read someone's personal story; someone who has walked the road of adoption.

Please read the following passage from a teenage birthmother whom we have had the privilege of supporting these past few months.

When I got pregnant at the age of 15, abortion was pretty much out of the question. My parents always told me that they would always love me but they were not going to raise my baby for me, so I had to think of my options, it was either parenting my baby or placing my baby for adoption.

If I chose to parent, I had to think about these things: how would I get him to doctor’s appointments? Who would watch him during the day and during the night while I went to school and work? How much money would I be spending a month between diapers, formula, and a babysitter or daycare?

I realized that I would barely even see my son at all if I chose to raise him, my schedule was going to school at 7:00, getting out at 3:00 and then going from school to work and not getting home until at least 9:00. So I looked into adoption. The deeper I dug the more I learned that adoption is not like what it is put off to be, you do get to see your child, you do get to pick the family your that adopts your baby, and you constantly get updates on how he/she is doing. I knew I wanted my son to get everything he could ever dream of and more. I wanted him to have a mommy who could stay home with him during the day and a daddy who would always love him, support him, and be there for him.

Those were things I could not provide for him. So after looking through many profiles of families looking to adopt I found “them”, the perfect family with two little girls who were just waiting for a baby brother. They were soon contacted and told I had chosen them to adopt my son and were filled with joy. I met them twice before he was born and felt like I had known them forever.

My beautiful baby boy was born April of 2010. I made the difficult but right decision to place him into the arms of his forever family when he was two days old. I knew I could always love him, if a baby didn’t need anything to survive but love, I would have been the best mommy in the world, but that wasn’t reality, reality was I could not raise my baby on my own, and because of the extreme amount of love I had for my baby boy, I gave him a chance in life, a chance to have everything he could ever dream of and more.

Do you hear the profound love echoed in this mother's words?

What maturity and selflessness she exhibits! We applaud her for the love she has for her son and for the determination she has shown in creating a secure plan for him. We are confident the Lord will bless her for her decision to choose life and to provide a stable loving home for her baby. Difficult days still lie ahead for her, but her days will also be full of pictures of her little boy and calls, letters and visits with him to confirm her choice for life was and remains good.

Isn't it refreshing to pick up the paper and read a good story now and then?

Too often our airwaves, blogs and newsprint are riddled with depressing stories of devastation and destruction. And, all too often, adoption seems to get negative press. We hear most frequently of the stories with ugly endings which only fuel the fire of those who do not understand the beauty of adoption. Then, like a ray of sunshine piercing the darkenss, we read a story of hope.

For a jolt of joy I encourage you to read Canada's The Globe and Mail's adoption reunion story of two biological brothers. You will never guess where they found each other!

Act of Life has the joy and privilege of helping people understand adoption. Most of the time we accomplish our mission through our educational programs geared toward groups. Every now and then, we have the opportunity to work one-on-one with courageous young women and men who are interested in creating a home for their child through adoption.

We are currently walking alongside a teen birthmother and her family. This young lady has decided on adoption from the beginning and has begun laying strong plans for her future and that of her baby. Recently I received this precious poem from the birth mother's mother, and I want to share it with you. It truly captures the loving heart of birthparents who choose adoption for their children.

From God's Arms, To My Arms, To Yours

So many wrong decisions in my past,
I'm not quite sure If I can ever hope to trust my judgement anymore.
But lately I've been thinking,
Cause it's all I've had to do.
And in my heart I feel that I
Should give this child to you.

And maybe, you could tell your baby,
When you love him so, that he's been loved before,
By someone, who delivered your son,
From God's arms, to my arms, to yours.

If you choose to tell him, If he wants to know,
How the one who gave him life
Could bear to let him go.
Just tell him there were sleepless nights,
I prayed and paced the floors,

Adoption Training @ The Source for Women Houston

What a resounding endorsement for the full-day adoption training Act of Life provides. We thank the Lord for another opportunity to present the Biblical perspective of adoption to a group of enthusiastic men and women yesterday.

The seminar was held at The Source for Women near the Galleria, and The Gladney Center for adoption sponsored the event so there was no charge for the attendees! We extend warm thanks to both of these amazing organizations!

Off to a Running Start

Happy New Year!

Act of Life is off to a strong start already. We have already touched 39 people with adoption information! We've educated clients who have called in or submitted email enquiries, educated residents of Houston's LifeHouse maternity home and trained counselors in 8 Dallas/Fort Worth pregnancy centers. All of this activity has been accomplished in the first 11 days of 2010! Praise the Lord!!

Along the lines of training, we want you to be aware of an upcoming training that will be held next Thursday, Jan. 21 at Source for Women here in Houston. It will run 11 - 5 and will include lunch. This particular seminar is fully underwritten by Gladney Center for Adoption, so there is no cost to attend. You won’t want to miss this opportunity ~ Details are as follows:

Celebration of Life 2009

These are just a few of the comments we have received through email, voice mail and Facebook since the Celebration of Life was held Friday, November 20. People battled the rain and the snarl of traffic to make it to the Houston Hilton Hobby Airport to take part in a fantastic evening.

The auction captured many people's attention with items from James Avery, premier golf courses in Houston and The Woodlands, along with pristine prints from beloved Christian artist, Larry Dyke. Many people secured special stocking stuffers for sure!

We were then treated to a delicious dinner (yes, the hotel food was very good - no rubber chicken) and an action-packed program. We heard a message by letter from Texas Governor Rick Perry, Dr. Joe Pojman from Texas Alliance for Life spoke about our collaborative relationship with them, and Colyn Bezanilla shared a heart-felt testimony from her perspective as a birth mother. Next, Executive Director, Lynda LeCompte gave a report of how effective Act of Life has been during this past year and then cast the vision for where we are headed in the days ahead. This led us to Dr. John Morgan of Sagemont Church introducing our keynote speaker, Dr. Richard Land.

Dr. Land's address was a combination of humor and urgency. He related to the audience very well and his message was clear: adoption is a key component in the overall pro-life message. Adoption is a loving parenting option. Adoption is a win-win-win situation - the birth mother, the baby, and the adoptive family. Adoption is an antidote to abortion.

All who were in attendance raved! Many congregations from around the city were represented, but we must say a big thank you to Sagemont Church. Their continued support has been a stabilizing force for our advancement in ministry. Hearty thank you's must also be sent out to the Board of Directors and the Event Committee for their tireless efforts which made the evening such a tremendous success.

Act of Life is a team made up of committed individuals, churches, donors and businesses who make our ministry to birth mothers, adoptive parents, adoptees, schools, pregnancy centers, maternity homes, juvenile detention centers and society in general possible.

Be watching in the coming weeks for more information on our exciting new education initiatives. The Lord has big plans in store for Act of Life, and He will utilize many to accomplish His purposes.

Orphan Sunday - Nov. 8

The Spirit of God is awakening the Church to the cry of the orphan. So, who is the orphan? The word 'orphan' might conjure up for you an image of a child in a third world country. Perhaps some think of a child in the U.S. Foster Care system. Still others enlarge the definition to include the baby being knit together in the womb of a woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Whatever you envision an orphan to be the Scriptures are clear: "This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." James 1:27 (NASB)

Act of Life wants you to be aware of a one-of-a-kind upcoming event in Houston. Come participate. Hear what God is doing in the United States and across the world. Worship, be inspired, and explore how the Lord might want to use you to care for the orphans in this world. We hope to see you there!

Legacy685 - Adoption & Orphan Care Ministry of Houston's First Baptist Church is hosting a special event on November 8 - Orphan Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the chapel. Join voices with Steven Curtis Chapman, Jim Daly, and Dennis Rainey to reach the nation with God’s call to care for orphans. Through excellent music and the sharing of the heart of God, we hope to give a megaphone to the cries of the millions of orphans around the world. Abortion & Adoption, In The Spiritual Realm

The Senior Pastor at my church, Sagemont Church in Houston, never fails to amaze me with his insight into the things of this world that have a direct correlation with things in the spiritual realm. Dr. John Morgan, or Brother John, as he is also known, this past Sunday morning shared with the congregation how he had come to a realization in the previous days about how abortion in the physical - the cutting short of a physical life - is the same as abortion in the spiritual. "How so?", you might ask. I will use my own words to describe my understanding of Brother John's thesis.

In the same way that a physical life can be sadly cut short in the womb through abortion, and oh how we mourn that loss, so too can a spiritual life be aborted. When we introduce people to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we are a conduit for the Holy Spirit to inject them with spiritual life support. Not that God needs us to do that, but it is perfectly clear in His word that we are to: "19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always,even to the end of the age.” Amen." Matthew 28: 19-20.

When we see those who are spiritually lost, and we are not active in the Great Commission to bring others to Jesus Christ, do we mourn that loss in the same way we mourn for the aborted baby in the womb?

We could also use the same analogy for those who are new believers. As Christians, sometimes we do not have the patience and/or perseverance to continue on a path alongside baby Christians. Therefore, they may not grow spiritually, and may never develop into the mature Christian that he has the potential to be. That spiritual life has been stunted. We do know that all Christians, regardless of maturity, have a place in the Kingdom. It is a much debated topic - once saved always saved - but is quite elementary. Scripture says in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." My emphasis added. Whosoever, which is all Christians, not just those who read the bible every day, taught Sunday School, attended seminary and brought hundreds to salvation. Of course, there are our crowns at the Bema Seat of Christ, but that's another study all by itself.

So, what about adoption in the spiritual? Anyone who has attended an Act of Life Adoption Workshop or Primer will have heard myself or Julie talk about how adoption of a child into a new physical family is the same as when we are saved: we are adopted into God's forever family: "... He predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ", Ephesians 1:5. Through physical and spiritual adoption alike, a person is given a new life.

Isn't that incredible that God gave us tangible analogies of life and death in the physical to help us understand life and death in the spiritual? He knows how our hearts break for every baby that is aborted, who could have potentially been adopted into the loving arms of a new family. As an adoption educator, I know how hard it is to help people understand that adoption into a physical family is a loving parenting choice that saves lives and creates families. Perhaps now we can understand how our heavenly Father's heart breaks for every spiritual life that is aborted, by not being adopted into His spiritual family.

Texas Life Connection Conference

Encouraging, enlightening, and inspiring are all words I would use to describe the recent Life Saving 201 Conference hosted by Texas Life Connections (TLC). On July 18, over 170 staff and volunteers of many pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex descended upon the west campus of First Baptist Church in Euless, TX. Participants gathered to learn how to be more effective in reaching today's women who walk through their doors.

People heard general sessions from Dr. Julie Parton (TLC), Mary Margaret Gibson, (Save the Mother, Save Her Child), and Marilyn Morris (Aim for Success). As a part of Act of Life I was blessed to present a breakout session called "Getting Beyond: I can't Give My Baby Away!" I'm happy to report the session was very well attended and guess what? We ran out of all of our resources! There is certainly a need to continue reaching out to pregnancy resource counselors equipping them with all they need to effectively present adoption. We were able to connect, pray with and refer people at the conference to resources which will help them continue their adoption journeys. We have our work cut out for us, but we are up for the task!

We are pleased to continue our collaborative relationship with Texas Life Connections. When we work together as the Body of Christ, not only do we serve more ministries and reach more people, I think more importantly, we glorify our Father in heaven.

Act of Life desires to remain true to our vision of advancing adoption awareness, and we are excited about the many doors God opens for us to realize this vision. Psalm 82:3-4 in the Bible says, "Vindicate the weak and fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and destitute. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked." Those who comprise Texas Life Connections (PRCs, maternity homes, life-affirming organizations along with Act of Life) are all certainly on the front lines playing their roles in fulfilling this verse. What a joy to be a part of this work!

They are servants who extended their gift of hospitality to me during my stay in Dallas. In today's economy their support helps us be the best stewards we can be with the financial treasures people entrust to our care.

Father's Day Bike Run

More fun than you can shake a stick at. That's my summary, but for the rest of civilization, here is a more detailed account.

We congregated early at San Jacinto Harley-Davidson and enjoyed the roar of each bike as it pulled up near the registration tent. It didn't take long before there was a decent sized group of people as the 19 riders, many with passengers, gathered around the registration tent, ready for the ride briefing. Instructions were shared, and we learned that we had an EMT and a nurse in the group, which was a gift from God given that the heat index was going to creep up past 100 degrees. We prayed and thanked the Lord for the beautiful day and the breeze, and asked for safety as we rode. John Skipper, a Harley-Davidson representative who had helped with registration setup, assisted us out of the parking lot by stopping the traffic, and off we went... the long way round to San Jacinto Monument.

It was amazing how all of the traffic lights were in our favor, and cars would pause at stop signs allowing all bikes to go through. My husband, the pack leader, Bud, commented how it was Jesus that had led us through those lights and stop signs, and how he felt like Moses parting the Red Sea. If you've seen Bud's beard you'll be smiling too!

Once at the monument, everyone relaxed, refreshed, and took a trip to the top of the

monument. Then the second part of the ride took us via a scenic route to Sagemont Church where we ate lunch, listened to praise and worship by the Aric Harding Band, and held the door prize draw and raffle. Everyone received a door prize ticket, and we gave an extra ticket to dads in honor of Father's day. Four people were pleased to receive the $25 Harley-Davidson gift cards for door prizes, and Eric Wold was the proud winner of the Harley Davidson mirror raffle.

It was a strange feeling standing up there in sweaty bike clothes with a dusty face talking to an audience about the ministry of Act of Life, but nobody, including myself, cared about formalities. It was an informal gathering of good people, who were interested in hearing about how lives can be saved through advancing adoption awareness.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the ride - I know I did! As the pack sweeper staying at the back of the pack, I got to see the sea of bikes in front of me. I don't mind saying I had a big grin on my face for much of the ride. :)

A Life Saved, Making It All Worth While

Dear reader,

It is with great joy, and a refreshed spirit, that I would like to share this incredible story of a life saved.

One of my personal favorite outreach activities with Act of Life is being able to go and talk to young ladies at LifeHouse Maternity Home about adoption as one of their parenting choices. These precious girls are all experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and have chosen life for their babies. They may be choosing to parent, or they may choose to make an adoption plan; either way, they are in a safe, Christ centered home for the duration of their pregnancy, and have time to think about their parenting choice and the future for their baby.

Recently, a beautiful young lady shared with me how this was her second time in LifeHouse. With her first pregnancy, she had considered her options, and with the help of Act of Life's adoption resources - the green and yellow cards - she had decided to make an adoption plan for her baby.

When she told her parents about her decision they were not in agreement as they thought she should have an abortion, and that they would be taking her to the clinic. The parents did not believe what the young lady had to say about adoption - the truths that she had learned from the Act of Life resources. The parents continued to be adamant that abortion was the best solution.

It was only when the young lady gave the green and yellow cards to her parents to read for themselves, that they were able to absorb those adoption truths and have a change of heart. They finally agreed that they would support their daughter with her adoption plan!

Not only was I blessed to hear this incredible story of a life saved, but also delighted in pouring over photographs of this precious child, that were taken prior to him being placed in the arms of his new family.

Just as sometimes we wonder if we are being effective in our sharing the gospel with others, we also wonder if we are effective in our life-affirming missions. God knows exactly when we need encouragement, and is faithful to show us the fruits of our labor - just when we need to hear it!

More Americans “Pro-Life” Than “Pro-Choice” for First Time

This article is an amazing demonstration of the paradigm shift that is taking place in society regarding the sanctity of human life. Could it be that the more a topic is discussed and debated, the more truths about the topic will surface, thereby allowing citizens to draw more informed conclusions? I truly believe that is the case. Many of us were disheartened at the dawning of the new U.S. administration, however, it is becoming crystal clear that, as always, the Lord's plan is perfect. He knows what we as a society need to go through in order for the truth to prevail.

The encouraging news of more Americans being pro-life goes hand in hand with what Act of Life is witnessing on the ground. As one of many pro-life ministries based in the greater Houston area, we are humbled and blessed to be part of a greater whole. The Christian Agencies for Pregnancy and Adoption (CAPA) are working together to support life-affirming parenting choices. It is amazing how life ministries are coming together to collaborate on outreach projects, touching more and more lives. While strength in numbers is not necessarily a biblical concept (correct me if I'm wrong!), a wall of truth is a force to be reckoned with.

As more and more people accept the truth about God's heart for the sanctity of human life being from conception to natural death, we are also witnessing repentance and turning to Him for healing and forgiveness.

Sagemont Church has just released the second part in a series for their Real Life TV program about the sanctity of human life. Topics in this episode include abortion, adoption as a life saving parenting choice, and abortion recovery. After the panel discussion is a closer look at Room 104; the abortion recovery class that is facilitated by Sagemont Church member, Khristey Walker, Executive Director of Pasadena Community Pregnancy Center, TX. We are quick to tout God's heart for life, but must remember there are hurting hearts and souls of women who have had an abortion, who may feel there is no hope of healing. Some may have been hurting for many years. The good news is... there is hope, in Jesus Christ alone.

Adoption Chat Room with Christian Women Today

People look for adoption information in many places. One such place is the Internet. A wealth of data can be obtained using a keyboard and screen in the privacy of one’s own home and after regular business hours.

We recently had the opportunity to partner with Christian Women Today (CWT), a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ Canada. Over the past decade I have had the great pleasure to work with these dedicated ladies on a variety of projects and can assure you of their effective ministry to women. One of the interesting ways they work is through Internet Chat Rooms.

A chat room is a unique place where women can log on, maintain anonymity and seek answers to questions they may be anxious to ask in traditional settings. May 4th was all about adoption. Here is what Rosemary DeFrancis (CWT chat moderator) had to say:

"Tonight we were privileged to have as our guest, Julie Stobbe. Her compassion and wisdom concerning adoption and teen pregnancy were so well received. Julie really ministered to the ladies in the room and the comments afterward were very encouraging. The chat was filled with 16 women from across North America and I know it helped those who were seeking healing and guidance. Thank you, Julie, for caring."

The Holy Spirit knows no bounds and women could sense the freedom He had to move and minister to women’s hearts. In fact, a woman named “Lisa” became a Christian because of the chat room conversation and experience. How beautiful to be discussing earthly adoption and then learn of Lisa’s spiritual adoption ~ all because women gathered in a chat room on a Monday evening!

“Hey Mrs. Julie, I heard you had been praying for me. I was a non-Christian and the other night, women from the cwt-forum led me to the Lord. There had been several people witnessing to me but I just wasn't ready. I just thought I would share that with you. Love, ‘Lisa’.”

We are thankful to have been a part of collaborating with Christian Women Today and seeing the harvest of an orphaned soul finding her forever home with God through salvation in Jesus Christ. What could be more gratifying than that??

What Are The Origins Of Mother's Day?

There are several accounts of the origins of Mother's Day in the U.S.A., but what I can be sure of, and what I am about to recount to you, is the origin of Mother's Day in my home country, dear old England.

Mother's Day in England was founded by my great grandfather, John Alexander Whitehead. You may be as surprised as I was when I discovered this during some research into Whitehead Aircraft, the aircraft company that was founded by my great grandfather during WWI. As an aviation enthusiast, I had always been excited about the fact that my great grandfather's factory had built many of the Sopwith Pups that were used in battle during WWI.

About 20 years ago, my research unearthed a newspaper article from 1916, clearly outlining the origin of Mother's Day and how John Alexander Whitehead wanted to, first of all, honor his own mother, and recognized the need to honor the mothers of soldiers and sailors who were away from home, serving their country in what was to become known as the Great War.

So, on the very first Mother's Day in England, held on Tuesday, August 8th, 1916, while sons were unable to be with their mothers, Mr. & Mrs. Whitehead 'adopted' a few hundred mothers and entertained them all with a fantastic lunch and wowed the crowd with an aerobatic display overhead. August 8th was chosen as it was the birthday of my great grandfather, a flamboyant character to say the least, who would have enjoyed such a huge celebration on his birthday, even though it was for the moms! On a side note, my father, also John Alexander Whitehead, was fittingly named after his grandfather as they shared the same birthday.

The Mother's Day article from 1916 has been reproduced on the Whitehead Aircraft website, along with another piece on the subject, and photographs from the 1917 Mother's Day outings.

Now that I have shared this little piece of Mother's Day history with you, and I prepare to retire for the evening before waking to a wonderful mother's day of my own, I would like to wish all moms a very happy and blessed Mother's Day!

Mother's Day Blessings

Phones will be ringing and florists will be delivering record numbers of bouquets this weekend since Mother's Day is Sunday. How are you planning to spend this day set aside to celebrate mothers everywhere?

Mother's Day will most likely bring up all sorts of emotions. For those of us with young children we look forward to homemade cards and perhaps piles of pancakes for 'breakfast in bed'. For others, Mother's Day may be marked with sadness due to a mother who has passed away during the previous year.

I particularly enjoy celebrating Mother's Day because I have two women to honor. My first mother, my birth mother, who gave me life and provided a family for me through adoption and my permanent mother who walked beside me each day of my life and reared me into adulthood. They are two very different women, but they are my two heroines! While I have inherited certain biological characteristics from one, I have acquired learned characteristics from the other.

However you choose to spend Mother's Day I pray you will pause to remember the birth mothers who are rarely remembered on Mother's Day. These courageous women make life possible for their children and create stable homes in the arms of loving mothers who will care for them on a daily basis. I also hope you will pause and remember the adoptive mothers who have opened their homes to children who are not born of their flesh but have been born from the love of their hearts.

No Mother's Day would be complete without the opportunity to ooh and aah a little. So, take a peek at this video which illustrates mothers come in a variety of packages. Whether a child is born into or brought into a family does not matter. Whether the child looks like the mom or not has no bearing on his or her value and place within the family. The love of a mother remains the same.

Mothers love children. It is just what they do.

An Adoption Evening

On Saturday, March 21st, Act of Life presented it's Inaugural Adoption Evening, at Sagemont Church, Houston - an event we had been looking forward to for some time! The attendees were able to browse the resource tables of the adoption agencies and support ministries that were present and chat with the representatives. This was a great opportunity for those touched by adoption to network with one another, and discover the support and services that are available to them. It was also an ideal time for the adoption agencies and services to network with one another, which is an opportunity not often found.

Following the time of networking, a program of powerful adoption testimonies and beautiful adoption songs from singer and songwriter, Becky Wright, moved the audience deeply.

Everybody agreed that the most powerful testimony of all was that given by a V.I.P.- a birth mom - who shared her real-life story of how she made the courageous decision to provide parents for her son in an open adoption, and the emotions she went through during that time. She shared how, over the years, she has been rewarded with love and a deep relationship with not only her son, but also with the parents she chose for him.

This powerful and touching story solicited immediate feedback from people who had their hearts and minds changed about an open adoption. People who never before could have considered adopting a child in an open relationship with the adoptive parents, but now, they saw that it was a very real and beautiful option.

As a special treat for friends of Act of Life and newcomers alike, Founder, Julie Stobbe took the stage and sang a beautiful song that was written by Becky Wright called, Act of Life. You can listen to it below.

People left the Adoption Evening feeling blessed by the powerful stories and songs, and carrying their event bags filled with information from the many adoption resources that participated. We are already looking forward to our next adoption event!

Right to Life Sunday at Grace Community Church

On Sunday, January 11th, a selection of Houston's life affirming ministries were invited to attend and exhibit at Grace Community Church's Right to Life Sunday. Act of Life was honored to attend. Not only were we able to share adoption facts with some, make referrals to adoption agencies for others, but we were also able to pray with a couple who are heart broken at the difficulties they are facing with their adoption process. This truly was a time of reaching out and ministering to those touched by adoption.

It was also a blessing to be able to network and chat with the representatives of the other life affirmining ministries that were present. After all, we are all working toward the same goal of ministering to those in need, and saving physical and spiritual lives in the name of Jesus Christ.

Rejoicing While Reviewing 2008

What a year this has been! We have been witness to the tremendous impact Act of Life has had on multiple audiences at the local, state and national level. Hearts have been transformed, minds persuaded; lives have been saved and families have been created. All of this has been accomplished through God’s power and for His glory.

We have also been witness to changes and challenges. Through sustained prayer, sacrifice and God's power, we have been able to overcome! There were times this year we faced what seemed to be impossible scenarios, but we saw God part the sea and make a way. Isn't that just like Him? He is the Great Way Maker! Nothing is too difficult for Him.

We have great plans in store for 2009, but before we launch into the new year, we want to pause and thank you for your role in our effectiveness this year. Your prayers, your gifts, and your support have made a tremendous difference, and we are grateful for you. On behalf of the Staff and the Board of Directors, let me extend not only our profound gratitude but also our best wishes for a tremendous 2009.

What will you believe Him for? He tells us, "Call upon Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know." (Jeremiah 33:3) He is able and He is willing to show you things you have yet to even dream of. Are you well positioned and willing to seek Him fully?

May you pursue His presence with a new determination this year, for in it, lies all you require for a rich and meaningful life.

Richmond Coffee Station Café and Dessertery hosts a Benefit Concert

The Richmond Coffee Station Café and Dessertery held an outdoor concert to benefit Act of Life. It was a superb evening of sharing and listening to praise and worship from the Sagemont Church band, Living Well. The weather was perfect as we enjoyed pizza and desserts from the fabulous menu, and enjoyed the company of Act of Life supporters and regulars to the coffee shop.

We would like to recognise and thank the coffee shop owner, Jan Hester, for her generous heart and desire to see Act of Life further it's adoption training programs. Jan retired as Executive Director for Katy Pregnancy Center to manage the coffee shop, and continues to use the positions in which the Lord places her to further the understanding of the sanctity of human life. We are extremely grateful to partner with Jan, and we encourage everyone to visit the Richmond Coffee Station Café and Dessertery for a delightful experience!

Thanksgiving a Month Early!

As we approach a season of thanksgiving next month Act of Life has reasons to be thankful today! With grateful hearts we are pleased to let you know about another marvelous provision the Lord has made for Act of Life.

First Baptist Church of Midland is a consistant and faithful supporter to people in the Permian Basin. We have been richly blessed with their generosity in the past, but did you know that FBC Midland has a foundation separate from their church body?

FBC Midland Foundation was chartered on October 23, 2003 to provide an opportunity to leave an enduring legacy to further the Kingdom of God. They have invested in many unique projects from providing funds for upgrading housing, to assisting a young woman through seminary, to providing Bibles through the Vietnamese Bible Society. Each project helped to provide necessary tools to meet specific needs.

We want to express our gratitude to the Board of Directors for their considerable contribution of $6000 to be invested in furthering God's plans for the Midland/Odessa region through Act of Life.

We look forward to tilling the soil of West Texas with updated resources, additional traning sessions and excellent referrals for those in need. More importantly we are looking forward to future opportunities of sharing the good news of salvation which God equates to adoption! Record Attendance at Training!

September 11th we had the privilege of offering our training to new people in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Working with the generous people at the Gladney Center for Adoption in Fort Worth we reached a record number of people at one time.

Here are just a few things that made our adoption training special:

We encouraged and equipped 42 people in a single session!
We reached representatives from 4 pregnancy care centers
We touched representatives from 3 different adoption agencies

The day was full of life, laughter and learning. You can imagine the great interaction with all of the participants. The practice counseling was truly fantastic with novices attempting adoption conversations for the first time and long-time pros illustrating their strengths to the group.

Here is a sample of comments from the evaluations taken at the conclusion of the day:

"(The training was) informative and held my interest. The time went very quickly and nothing dragged"
"I enjoyed the whole day. Very well planned and organized"
"Very concise and full of helpful info right at your fingertips"
"The speaker was dynamic - kept my attention and very informative"

A special thank you goes out to Jennifer Lanter and her team from the Gladney Center who truly went the extra mile to provide not only a lovely facility but delicious food as well. What a marvelous picture of the Body of Christ working together to advance adoption!

"Choose Life Texas Tour Begins on Sept. 13 to promote pro-adoption Choose Life license plate For eight days starting Saturday, September 13, the Choose Life Texas Tour will crisscross the state, visiting 11 cities with over 16 meetings and events to promote the pro-adoption Choose Life license plate for our state. Texas Alliance for Life is launching the Choose Life Texas Tour with numerous other pro-life organizations to make a Choose Life license plate a reality in Texas.

The Choose Life license plate is on the road in 19 other states and has raised more than $9 million for pregnancy help centers and Gabriel Projects to assist women with crisis pregnancies who are considering the loving option of adoption. Although Texas has over 130 specialty license plates, our state does not yet have the Choose Life plate.

Why not Texas? The Texas Legislature must pass a law to create the Choose Life license plate when it meets in January. The Choose Life license plate in Texas will promote adoption and other compassionate alternatives to abortion and raise funds to assist women experiencing a crisis pregnancy considering adoption. Of the $30 fee for the plate, $22 will go to this mission and $8 will cover Texas Department of Transportation's production costs.
"This is about the loving option of adoption," said Pojman. "Our goal is to create more win-win-win situations in Texas for birth moms, children, and adoptive parents."

FBC Midland Sews Seeds

One of my favorite things to do is hear or share examples of how the Lord has provided in a person's life or in the life of a specific ministry. At Act of Life we continuously see the Lord's hand moving among us, and He always supplies our needs. He is using us to accomplish His purposes.

Today We want to give thanks to the Lord for yet another congregation stepping forward and investing in God's Kingdom. The mission team at First Baptist Church of Midland, Texas has stepped forward and sewn financial seeds in Act of Life. Under the leadership of Bill Johnson and Hank Henry (pictured) they have invested $1000 toward helping us advance adoption awareness at local, state and national levels.

Historically FBC Midland has frequently been in the top ten of the most generous churches giving to Baptist missions programs nationwide. They see how Act of Life is providing hope and biblical resources, so they are fortifying our ranks to ensure we continue to minister.

Blazing a Trail in Beautiful B.C.

The motto on British Columbia license plates is "Beautiful B.C." and beautiful it certainly is! The magnificent mountains, tall trees and evergreen surroundings are such a welcomed sight - eye candy everywhere! Some of you may remember my husband, Doug, is Canadian, and was reared in the Vancouver area, so it was a real treat for our family to mix a little fun with Act of Life ministry on our recent trip to Canada.

Yes, I saw this young mountain buck on an early morning hike down to Okanagan Lake with my sweet friend, Rita. The challenge was getting back UP the mountain. Well worth the effort...

June 20 and 21 I had the privilege of presenting our full day adoption training to the Okanagan Valley Pregnancy Care Center in Kelowna, B.C. This was a seminal event for Act of Life, since it was the first time we have presented our full curriculum in Canada. However, this was not the first time Act of Life has presented adoption material to Canadian audiences. In Spring 2005 we offered adoption breakout sessions and I was a keynote speaker during the national conference for the Canadian Association of Pregnancy Support Services (CAPSS).

But, back to our recent training in B.C.... We did something a little different. Instead of offering the full seminar in one day as we are accustomed to doing, we chose to split the training over 2 days. This proved to be a success! People remarked they appreciated having time to digest and process the information from the evening session before diving into the practical application of the second session offered the following morning.

Every seminar we present is unique due to the collection of participants. Each group is a blessing and this particular group was no exception. They were fantastic! We engaged in deep discussion, explored our bias for or against adoption and emerged from the training experience better prepared to converse about adoption with those whom we will encounter.

We were blessed to also have join us three participants from Salmon Arm, B.C. They are in the initial stages of preparation to open a pregnancy center to serve the women and men in their community and they took advantage of our education program while we were in the vicinity.

A special thank you goes to our life-long friends Rita and Bob Letkeman who opened their doors to our family and made our stay in Kelowna such a delight. Gratitude also extends to Jeannie Rodgers, Client Services Director at the OVPCC, for her tireless efforts to organize and assist in such an effective training session.

We thank God for the life saving work He is accomplishing through the efforts of our brothers and sisters in Canada, and we look forward to future ways we can partner together.

The Blessing of Buckner

"The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'” Matthew 25:40

One night last week I had the distinct privilege of speaking at an appreciation dinner for Buckner Children Family Services. Held at Midland’s distinguished Petroleum Club, the audience was treated to a delightful evening including a delicious meal, personal testimony from people who have benefited from and volunteer for Buckner’s ministry and a powerful duet sung by Dave Robbins and Kristie Garnett.

I could not help but moved as I listened to one of those who gave testimony; Lisa shared how her life has changed since last year’s dinner. She felt compelled to complete foster care certification and for the past five months has been caring for a precious infant boy, Miguel. She hopes to become his forever mother through the permanency of adoption. Miguel stole everyone’s heart with his big blue eyes and bright personality.

It was a pleasure to share parts of my personal adoption journey with the good folks of Buckner. Greater still, it was good to learn how they are being the hands and feet of Jesus to children and families across Texas and specifically in the Permian Basin. As it says on their website, “Buckner Children and Family Services is a Christian ministry devoted to protecting children, promoting independence and strengthening families.” Truly they are accomplishing the mandate from James 1:27 where it states, “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”

Buckner Hearthstone offers a variety of services including: foster care, foster to adopt, domestic and international adoption as well as CPS adoption. We should thank the Lord for Buckner because they are committed to ministering to the “least of these” in our society through the life-altering love and compassion of Jesus Christ. Through their tireless efforts and strong commitment they are seeing to it that people understand there are no strangers, no outcasts, and no orphans to the Lord.

IBM Supports Act of Life

There is much to be said for dedicated service and sheer determination. That would be a simplified way of describing the way in which Bill Dunlap, Act of Life board member, achieves results such as this. Shown in the picture is Karen Nunn, APC System Integration Project Manager with IBM Global Business Services, Bill Dunlap and Lynda LeCompte, Act of Life's Executive Director.

Karen presents a check for $1,000 to Bill, who received the check on behalf of Act of Life. IBM have consistently shown support for Act of Life through regular giving, which Bill has brought about through his advocacy for our mission of advancing adoption awareness. IBM is able to donate through their community outreach program for retirees called, On Demand Community, which provides a grant in the form of cash or equipment for qualified charities.

Bill retired from IBM after 30 years of service and has been involved with Act of Life for the past three years. During this time, Bill has dedicated over 700 hours of voluntary service to Act of Life. This admirable effort has produced amazing results in the form of a steady stream of financial or in kind donations coming from corporations, retail stores and individuals.

Thank you IBM, for your faithful support and to Bill Dunlap for your unparalleled service and advocacy for adoption awareness.

Remember this? This was how Merinell's office looked just a few days ago.

Now, with much appreciation to Ken and Sharon Gray, members of Sagemont Church, Merinell's office is now furnished with a wonderful desk and credenza and is fully functional.

Ken and Sharon had recently expressed that they wished to donate the furniture to Act of Life but warned that it was heavy and was located on the 2nd floor of their home. All it took was a request to Sagemont Church's Helping Hands ministry to assist with moving the furniture and the very next day, Dr. Jim Hastings, Minister of Helping Hands, and another fine gentleman appeared with the furniture aboard their huge truck and brought it right into the office. Within an hour, it looked like this.

As I give thanks to Ken and Sharon for their kind donation and to Dr. Jim and the Helping Hands ministry for such prompt and efficient assistance, I am humbled to the core as I, yet again, witness the body of Christ working together in HIS service.

Showing off God's provision

Our HQ in Houston has now been in its new office space for almost a month. It has taken a while to become fully functional by having phone lines, Internet access and desks, but we all know that moving rates highly on the list of things most difficult and stressful. Having said that, this really has not been overly stressful. The move has been more of a blessing and a show of God's faithfulness in wanting to provide.

Here is an example of that. I had found a wonderful leather office chair on Craig's List for a great price. The lady, Amanda, who was selling the chair was moving house and had the moving truck there when I arrived. We chatted and it transpired that Amanda has friends who have adopted and was very supportive of Act of Life's mission. Among other items that Amanda was also trying to sell to avoid loading on the truck was this lovely bistro set as seen in the picture. After I had expressed interest as it appeared perfect for the new kitchen, Amanda decided to donate it to the ministry! Thank you, Amanda! We love it and have eaten a few muffaletta sandwiches at that table already. (We have a great Italian deli just across the road and we're working our way through the menu - we have to try it all out!)

This is what will be the conference area. The credenza is part of a set that my father-in-law donated to the ministry. It really is beautiful. I have an odd shaped office that would not accommodate the credenza, so we will find another spot for it.

On the right is Merinell, our bookkeeper's office. As you can see, the desk is purely functional, but again, we are blessed to have another desk and credenza coming from a couple who have helped Act of Life in the past with volunteer work.

Below is Laurie's office. Laurie is our admin assistant. Again, the desk leaves a little to be desired, and we have not yet located a desk for this office, but we just know that the Lord already has a plan for this!

Laurie has been working hard at sorting out the many boxes that have been in storage and making this reception area her own. We can't wait to see it all finished!

Finally, below is my office. As you can see, there is not a shortage of shelving! The desk has some paint residue on the edge and I hear that a goofy named product called 'Goof Off' will do the trick without damaging the finish.

You've heard the saying 'little things please little minds'? Well, the fact that we are at ground level, I can park right outside my office and can see my car (or motorbike) through the window just pleases me no end! That's our God. With such little details as that, I find myself praising Him and thanking Him for those things.

There are still some needs e.g. a microwave, decor and some bigger ticket items such as an all-in-one printer and a new computer for Laurie, amongst other things, but we are humbly awaiting the Lord's timing for these things and are not fretting, for we already have more than we could have hoped for.

Oops, I almost forgot. We have a room that will be used for watching training videos and child-care. See that sad little cable coming out of the wall? That is the free basic cable TV feed that came with our phone and Internet package. The cable just needs a TV to plug itself into, to go along with the DVD player that we already have, and we'll be in business!

What you don't see in this picture is the other half of the room that is being used for storage. A curtain can hide a multitude of sins - or brown boxes.

We are excited about the days ahead and pray that the Lord will continue to bless Act of Life, it's new offices in Houston and Midland, and our staff, volunteers and board members as we work towards achieving our mission of advancing adoption awareness.

A Day Well Spent

Recently I had the great privilege of spending the better part of a day at the headquarters for the Gladney Center for Adoption in Fort Worth, Texas. With 8 regional offices across America, Gladney is one of the oldest and largest maternity homes and adoption agencies in the United States. Through the years they have created homes for more than 27,000 children and assisted more than 36,000 birth mothers.

I am not sure where or how to begin describing this beautiful campus, but let me try. I toured the maternity center which can house up to 30 birth mothers at a time in dorm style living (2 per room). During my visit 21 women were receiving assistance. Gladney is able to house women as young as 12 years old.

Their maternity home truly sets the standard for the nation in terms of housing for birth mothers. The facilities are much like a park; fresh, well manicured, beautifully decorated - just like anyone would want their home to be.

The outer appearance is not all that takes Gladney’s attention however. The women they serve are priority number one. In these safe surroundings women are able to focus on their physical, mental and spiritual state of being. They have access to a fully equipped gym and outdoor swimming pool, they have personal responsibilities in cleaning their rooms and preparing evening meals, and they are able to attend weekly Bible Study as well. The staff makes sure residents are transported to and from school each day. Everything Gladney does is meant to fully serve the birth mother’s needs in a supportive atmosphere while she creates a plan for her baby’s future.

Another component that makes Gladney unique is its visitor center. In a museum like setting, one can take time to explore the history of adoption as a whole and the history of the Gladney Center for Adoption which was started by a Methodist missionary minister named I.Z.T. Morris. This museum is state of the art and offers a one of a kind experience.

I was deeply moved to walk into their blessing chapel where babies are kissed, blessed and then placed in the loving arms of their new forever families. How this must please God’s heart; to see lives saved and families created. It took my breath away. Once again I was reminded that adoption affects generations….

The thing that strikes me most about Gladney is their commitment not only to the birth mothers and the adoptive families that they serve but their commitment to seeing adoption understood within our society. They actively promote education and provide services that illustrate the benefits of adoption.

Has US abstinence policy failed?

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10

"Has US abstinence policy failed?" shouts the headline on a BBC news report. It reads:

"US lawmakers are investigating whether to cut government funding for health education programmes that promote sexual abstinence until marriage. The move follows a report earlier this year from America's leading health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which revealed one in four teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease."

Indeed, that is a significant amount of STDs among teenagers. The article continues and sites:

"This national programme which has wasted $1.5bn (£750m) of tax money is a failure and our teens are paying the price," says Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood. "We've been wasting money on programmes that don't work and we're seeing the consequences every single day."

It reads as though the president of Planned Parenthood is actually blaming the abstinence programs for the increasing number of STDs among teenagers! I am sure she is not, but she certainly is trying to give the impression that abstinence programs are a waste of time. Thankfully, the Heritage Foundation have done their homework on the issue of the impact of abstinence programs and it is very encouraging news. Read more about their findings here.

As adoption advocates, we aim to see truths about not only adoption, but also about all issues concerning God's heart for life. We must continue to uphold and teach God's will for us as individuals and in our relationships. If abstinence before marriage were so well taught, understood and embraced that there was not a need for crisis pregnancy centers and teaching about parenting choices, then... praise God! Praise Him, indeed.

Letter to My Son

Unmarried women face many fears when they discover they are pregnant and they are not prepared. Some are immediately tempted to abort because fears of the future for their children are so great they cannot fathom any other alternative. What is she to do? Where is she to turn for answers?

I would like us to consider a woman from many generations past who faced some very similar fears: the mother of Moses. Let’s remember that when Moses was born, the ruling Pharaoh demanded that all male Hebrew babies be killed. Moses’ mother must have harbored very real fears and concerns for her baby’s future. As she held her infant son I can imagine she wondered, “Do I attempt to hide him any longer? If I’m discovered they will surely murder him. Perhaps I should end his life before they do...What am I to do? Where do I turn to for answers?”

Moses’ mother was not paralyzed by her own fears. She took time to think, to pray, to make a plan, and then to act. She deliberately put her trust in Yahweh. He would take care of her son.

Here is a letter she might have written to her tiny boy* :

My precious son Moses,

How deeply I love you! Yet the Pharaoh said all Hebrew baby boys must be thrown in the Nile and drowned. I could only hide you for three months. To save your life, I carefully wove a basket big enough for you, waterproofing it so it would not sink. I sobbed as I hid you away among the Nile's reeds. But I knew this was the best choice for you. Your sister watched as the princess found you there! God's hand is upon you, my son. As you grow up, please understand that I allowed another family to raise you so that you might have a special life - one I could not give you because of circumstances.

With all my loving heart and soul,
Your mother

Flushing a Newborn Baby Down a Toilet?

My friends, if ever there was a time we need to advance adoption awareness in our society it is now.

Earlier today, a 14 year old teen delivered a baby in the restroom at her junior high school in Baytown, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Overwhelmed and not sure what her next step was, she attempted to flush her seconds old baby down the toilet. As a result of this desperate action her baby died. Now she finds herself in the midst of a homicide investigation.

Inconceivable, irrational, and insane are just a few words that come to mind.

As bizarre as this seems, she is not the first to have attempted this. Last summer, a 20 year old woman delivered a baby in a McDonald’s restroom in Kansas City, MO, and tried to flush her baby down the toilet as well.

How could Act of Life have benefited these mothers and their precious babies? The answer: education.

Are you aware that Texas has a law called the Baby Moses Law? According to the non-profit group called Baby Moses Dallas, “Of the over 100 babies who are abandoned each year in Texas, about 16 will be found dead.” This is alarming. However, there is a solution. The Baby Moses Law provides a responsible alternative to mothers and fathers who might otherwise abandon or harm their newborn child. The law states that a parent may leave an unharmed infant, up to 60 days old, at any hospital or fire station with “no questions asked” and will not face charges of abuse, neglect or abandonment.

Had the young teen in Baytown, Texas, known about the Baby Moses law perhaps her baby would be alive tonight.

Act of Life includes instruction on the Baby Moses law in our adoption training seminars. We regularly ensure that pregnancy counselors are aware of the law and understand the importance of explaining it to their clients. Act of Life also recognizes the desperate need to get adoption tools, resources, and information inside our school classrooms.

Act of Life on KKHT 100.7 FM

This evening, between 6 and 7pm, Julie called in and I was in the studio as guests on the ChurchQuake radio show on KKHT 100.7 FM. ChurchQuake's host, pastor Chris Murphy, and co-host, Jim Serber, kindly dedicated the whole show to adoption and conducted the interview so that Julie and I could talk about what Act of Life is doing, what adoption is and how the message needs to be heard that adoption is a very viable parenting choice, is an alternative to abortion, and even, in some cases an alternative to parenting!

It was a fun time to be able to share, and we thank the ChurchQuake ministry for this opportunity.

ChurchQuake dedicates the show to talking about the elephants in the church. I want to know which churches Chris has been preaching in as I have never seen an elephant at church! I can say this as Chris, his lovely wife, Mica, and their three precious children are my neighbors. Our kids play together and we have been threatening to all go on a motorcycle ride together. Chris is also Pastor at the local community church, First Baptist of Brookside Village, Pearland, TX . By the elephants in the church, Chris is referring to the causes of church division in modern Christianity. He addresses the issue every week in a loving but direct manner that makes for a powerful show. I encourage you to tune in. You can also visit their website for more information.

The subject of adoption and how that parenting choice can save lives and create families falls nicely into the category of an elephant in the church because, by proxy, it is also touching on the subject of abortion, abstinence, two parent families and the family unit. These are issues dear to our Father's heart and would benefit from being addressed more directly in society and the church.

Christ's Amazing Love for You

Where do you find yourself today? Do you feel all alone in your situation or perhaps not very loved at the moment? Let me share something with you.

During my time with the Lord today I read from Andrew Murray's book called Abide in Christ. When writing about how Jesus loves us just as the Father loved him (John 15:9) Murray wrote,

"When it was needed, He sacrificed His throne and crown for you. He did not count His own life and blood too dear to give for you. His righteousness, His Spirit, His glory, even His throne, all are yours. This love holds nothing back, but, in a manner that no human mind can fathom, makes you one with itself. What wondrous love, to love us even as the Father loved Him, and to offer us this love as our everyday dwelling."

Our everyday dwelling - in this love. What a truth! This is a truth you can stake your life on. God wants you to know the truth that He loves you and that His love is available for you to abide in every single day. This love is not based on who you are, what you do or what you have accomplished. It is also not based on what you think you can do for God. This love He extends to you is based on who HE is. Love is not one of God's attributes. It is who He IS - the very center of His being. He loves you simply because He created you. Isn't that amazing?

God asks us to take notice of this deep love which we cannot comprehend. We dare not resist or ignore it. My prayer for you today is that you will yield to His love. He longs to spend time with you and show you how you can live a victorious life. If you have any questions about this, please contact me. I would love to hear from you.

A True Celebration of Life!

"Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples; sing to Him, sing praises to Him; speak of all His wonders. Glory in His holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad. Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually."

Psalm 105:1-4

This passage has been dear to me since the day the Lord whispered His vision for Act of Life in my ear, and this scripture continues to remain the focus of our ministry today. How fitting it was to share these verses with those who braved the stormy weather last night and joined us for our benefit concert.

We were blessed with a tremendous evening as we commemorated the great acts which the Lord has accomplished in our midst. We remembered the Lord’s faithfulness in our past and we put our trust in Him for our future.

Best of all, Dennis Jernigan led us in an extended time of worship through music and words of encouragement. His lyrics, apart from the melodies, can lead me to the throne of God in an instant. When we heard the breadth of his talent and the depth of his passion for Christ pour powerfully through his voice and fingers, hearts and hands were lifted high all around the room, and the Spirit of the Living God truly inhabited the praises of His people.

Act of Life is poised to embrace the next level of ministry, and we are eager to see where the Lord will take us! We are thankful for your consistent support as we continue to advance adoption awareness at the local, state, and national level.

On the Airwaves with Story Corps.

Today I had an amazing opportunity to spend quality time with my birth mother, Alyson. We were invited to record our adoption story in San Antonio, Texas, with Story Corps. which is part of National Public Radio (NPR). Their mission is to honor and celebrate people’s lives through listening. The stories they capture are stored in the Library of Congress so that future generations can listen and learn. http://www.storycorps.net/

It was of particular of interest for Alyson and me to return and record our conversation in the Alamo City because this is precisely the spot where our story began. As a pregnant teen, Alyson lived in the maternity center at Methodist Mission Home (MMH) for about three months. She was one of the first residents to live in their brand new facility in 1968. Oops, I slipped! Now you know how old I am...but how great to return to the MMH campus in 2008 to the very blessing chapel where my parents held me in their arms and dedicated me to the Lord at the tender age of three days old. Only this time, at nearly 40 years old, I was standing beside the woman who gave me life and who created a home for me through adoption. The moment was intensely humbling and quite gratifying.

After wrapping up our interview (which took place right beside the Alamo) we headed to El Mercado to feast on the fine cuisine served at Mi Tierra! All I can say is, "Bring more salsa, tortillas, and pecan prailines." What a fine way to wrap up our day.

Adoption vs. Abortion

When speaking of unplanned pregnancies it seems many people want to discuss options through the lens of only ‘parenting vs. aborting’. Too often we focus on this battle for life (and yes, it is a battle) as a 50-50 toss of a coin while we lament, “She’s likely to abort.” Abortion seems like an invincible force that woos women to believe the lie “out of sight, out of mind.” Research has proven post abortion stress is seen not only within clinic walls but also in the pews on Sunday mornings.

Unfortunately many Christians have restricted their influence by choosing to focus on only two options: parenting and abortion. We want women to see the value of life, so what should we do? Push parenting? Tire of the battle and give in? Neither, but how can we as "pro-lifers" and especially pregnancy counselors gain an advantage for life in these circumstances?

Along with counselors, we gain an advantage for life when we introduce adoption to people within the framework of “parenting choices” right from the beginning. In our country it is true that there are three choices: abortion, parenting, and providing parents (through adoption). Every pregnancy counselor should be able to speak truth about each of these, yet statistics show us that too many counselors shy away from presenting adoption. There are a multitude of reasons why. Often adoption is omitted from the counseling room discussion because people make assumptions that a woman will not really consider adoption. While it is true that most birth mothers who have placed for adoption did so by considering adoption later in their pregnancy, we must assume nothing and intentionally plant a seed for adoption from the start.

When we exclude adoption we make it easier for some women to parent before they are prepared. Likewise, when we exclude adoption, we make it easier for women to abort. Please keep these two thoughts in mind while reading the following article.

Houston will be the site of the largest freestanding abortion facility in the Western Hemisphere

As most of you are very well aware, our local Planned Parenthood is expanding and purchased a very large building at 4600 Gulf Freeway a little over a year ago. This expansion is being done to comply with Texas law stating that an abortion of a pregnancy of 16 weeks or more has to be done at an ambulatory surgical center or hospital licensed to perform the abortion.

What we didn't realize is that when this move takes place, which is projected for the fall of 2008, Houston will have the notoriety of having the largest freestanding abortion facility in the Western Hemisphere. Planned Parenthood of Houston & Southeast Texas plans to open a multimillion-dollar "flagship" abortion center just outside the gates of the University of Houston's main campus. This six-story building is 78,000 square feet, and the ambulatory surgical center will take up the entire third floor. This is where unborn babies up to 25 weeks will be aborted. This is more than half way through a woman's pregnancy! We know that babies born after 24 weeks have a very good chance of survival.

Planned Parenthood writes, "Our new building at 4600 Gulf Freeway is significantly larger and more secure than our current location. The new expanded campus will allow us to provide a safe and welcoming health care home for our current clients, and to meet the future needs of clients throughout the Houston area."

Christmas Season Giving and Praying

It is that time of year when we reflect on the year's events and start planning on how we can further our mission in the following year. This is a crucial time of year for every ministry as budgets are planned and prayers are said for the Lord to provide, if that is His will.

Radio Interview with Terry Lowry

This morning I had a telephone interview with Terry Lowry, of the Whats Up radio program. The interview was titled "...the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” As well as adoption awareness, we talked about the desperate need for prayer in the adoption arena and ways that people can get involved. Adoption Awareness Month

It's Adoption Awareness Month and we will be having information displays and representatives in the Missions booth at Sagemont Church. On Wednesday, 7th November, also at Sagemont Church, Stuart Rothberg will be interviewing a special couple with a wonderful adoption story, followed by a brief interview with myself to talk about our mission at Act of Life. The Adoption Network by Laura Christianson

Laura Christianson was kind enough to send Act of Life a signed copy of her new book, "The Adoption Network: Your Guide to Starting a Support System", and I wasted no time in getting stuck in to read it. As a brand new Executive Director for a network resource center for adoption, I was very keen to learn as much as I could, as quickly as I could.

I quickly discovered that this was a perfect book for me to read. While I had a good picture of my responsibilities as a new E.D., Laura's book starts by identifying why there is a need for adoption support networks. A great start by focusing the mind on the mission. While I was already clear on the type of support network that I would be directing for Act of Life, there is a chapter on the types of support networks that are needed. Again, this was great for highlighting to me some of the areas that I am likely to come across when working in the adoption arena, and no doubt useful for those that do not have a defined mission statement and vision, as Act of Life does.

The next section, which is about organizing your network, was very well structured, containing great details, bullet points and worksheets. There was no room to misinterpret or not understand what needs to done. As an established network resource center, we had most of the suggestions in place, but this information certainly proved useful to myself to help understand why things are structured the way they are and perhaps where things could be improved upon.

For me, section four contained the meat and potatoes, with much sound advice on many crucial aspects of developing an effective adoption support network. There are many great suggestions on some essential elements, including, how to build your resources, network with other like-minded organizations and utilize the Internet in the best possible ways to increase your growth and outreach potential. The Internet suggestions being my personal favorites.

It was wonderful to read about the importance of prayer for the support networks, its workers, and the people that are touched by the ministry. This is such an important part of any ministry and yet is so often forgotten about. We all pray in our private times with the Lord, and we pray corporately when at church, but it is so important that we continue to do this outside of the physical church building. A great reminder from Laura.

The book is finished with a superb list of resources for launching your network. Laura really did her homework when writing this book and it felt like an insight into Laura's mind as she shares so many hints and tips that come from someone who has been there and done that. There is no point in reinventing the wheel and you really don't have to with such an insightful book as "The Adoption Network". A must read for anyone considering starting a support network for adoption. I will definitely read it again!
